What Consistency Really Means (Hint: It Is Not What You Think)

Ask most people what consistency means and they will describe something close to perfection. Never missing. Maintaining the streak. And because this is the standard most people hold themselves to, consistency becomes a habit they feel permanently behind on, always failing at, always about to start properly once life settles down. This version of consistency is a trap.

The Real Definition

Here is a more honest and useful definition: doing something often enough, over a long enough period, that it becomes part of your identity and produces genuine change. Notice what that definition does not require: daily execution. Perfect attendance. Zero missed days.

The Research on Missed Days

The Phillippa Lally research on habit formation found that missing one day had essentially no statistically significant effect on habit formation. The habit still formed at roughly the same rate. What did affect formation was missing multiple days in a row. This is the empirical basis for the never-miss-twice principle. One missed day is noise in the signal.

What True Consistency Looks Like

Someone who journals six days out of seven over a year has produced more than 300 journal entries. That is a substantial body of work that has almost certainly shifted how they process and understand their inner life. The one missed day in seven is irrelevant. The pattern is what did the work.

Building Flexible Consistency

Instead of “I will do this every day,” try “I will do this at least five days a week.” Instead of “I never miss,” try “I never miss twice.” These are not excuses — they are evidence-based adjustments that make the standard achievable for real humans with real lives.

The psychology of returning after a miss is explored in the psychology of starting over. And for the minimum effective version of any habit on low-energy days, the 5-minute habit rule gives you the practical floor that keeps the habit alive.
